Role Intelligence

Which jobs will AI replace?

Fewer than the headlines suggest, but more of every job than most people expect. AI takes over tasks long before it removes whole roles, so the real question is how much of your week is the kind of work it does well.

Across the 70 roles we've mapped task by task, about 22% of typical tasks are likely to be automated, 38% will be done faster with AI, and 40% stay human-led. The jobs that shrink are the ones made mostly of the first kind.

What makes a job safe from AI?

There are no AI-proof jobs, but there are AI-resilient versions of almost every job. They have three things in common:

  1. 1

Someone has to own the decision. When an outcome affects people, money or safety, a person stays accountable. AI can recommend; it can't answer for the result.

  2. 2

The work runs on trust. Persuading a skeptical stakeholder, handling a conflict, coaching someone through a hard call: AI can draft the words, but people follow people they trust.

  3. 3

The situation doesn't fit a script. Messy, novel or high-stakes problems still need someone who can read the room and adapt.

The catch: many people were hired for the routine part of their job, not these skills. That gap, not AI itself, is the real career risk.

FAQ

Jobs and AI: common questions

What jobs will AI replace?

AI replaces tasks before it replaces jobs. The roles most exposed are those where most of the week is structured information work: data entry, routine processing, standard reporting, first-draft writing and scheduling. Roles built mainly on that work shrink or merge. Roles where judgment, trust and accountability are central change shape but keep their value.

Will AI take my job?

For most people, AI will take parts of the job rather than the whole job. The risk depends on your mix of tasks, not your title: two people with the same job title can have very different exposure. Map your own tasks to see which parts of your work are exposed and which are protected.

Which jobs are safe from AI?

No job is untouched, but the safest share three traits: decisions someone must be accountable for, work that depends on trust and relationships, and situations too messy or high-stakes for a script. Roles that combine these with using AI well are gaining value.

What are AI-proof jobs?

There are no fully AI-proof jobs, only AI-resilient versions of jobs. The resilient version of a role spends less time producing and processing, and more time judging, advising, persuading people in person, and owning outcomes. That shift is what to plan for.

Will AI replace jobs in the next five years?

Current evidence points to fewer new openings in the most exposed work, especially entry-level roles, rather than large-scale layoffs of existing staff. The bigger near-term change is inside jobs: the routine part shrinks and expectations rise for the rest.
